When Tenzing Norgay and Sir Edmund Hillary climbed Mount Everest in 1953, it was a historic moment in mountaineering history. It was also a turning point in the lives of Norgay's fellow Sherpa people.

Before 1953, the Sherpa people used to lead a very simple and peaceful life. Most Sherpas worked on farms. They used to have very little contact with people from other parts of the world. Now, things have changed, and thanks to technology, Sherpa society is much better connected.

Tourism has also been a major factor in changing the lives of the Sherpas. After 1953, and especially in the 1970s, the number of tourists wanting to visit Nepal increased significantly. Today, tourism is the biggest source of income for most Sherpas. Tourism has brought more wealth to the region, and many Sherpas now have a better standard of living.

Back in 1953, education and healthcare in Sherpa villages were very basic. Now, however, there are many schools and medical clinics with much better facilities. Another reason for better health among the Sherpas is a change in their diet: People eat healthier food than they used to. These days, people have access to food from other regions. They even have access to better building materials. New buildings are much safer than they used to be.

There are some, however, who preferred life the way it was in the past. Some older Sherpas are disappointed that people seem to be moving away from the traditional way of life. They believe that some Sherpas these days think too much about money and are therefore losing the ability to focus on true happiness.
